De mis pasos en la tierra: Language and Emotions in Displacement Contexts

Abstract

In this study, we start from the multisensory literary text as an activator of emotions and unique evocations, in order to enhance productive language skills in migrants from different backgrounds. For this activation, we based ourselves on Blumer's (1969) symbolic interactionism, according to which human experience is mediated by interpretation, since "human beings act on things according to the meaning they have for them". Following the reading by the participants, six women migrants to Spain, of an autobiographical text from the book De mis pasos en la tierra (1998) by Francisco Ayala about their lost Christmases, we have collected the testimonial texts that these displaced people have written evoking their longed-for celebrations. In the short term, our aim is to encourage the emergence of the whole range of singular referents to which the text may refer, in order to identify those recurrent representations that link imaginaries despite linguistic and cultural distance. In the long term, the aim is to vindicate the potential of the act of remembrance as a way of approaching language in a more meaningful way in the adult education classroom.

Author Biographies

Ariadna Saiz Mingo, University of Burgos

Ph.D. in Language and Literature Education from the University of Barcelona. MEC language assistant in Martinique (1997–1999) and AECI lecturer (2000–2001) at the University of Cocody (Ivory Coast). Since 2015, she has been a professor in the Department of Philology at the University of Burgos, specializing in Semantics and Second Language Teaching for Migrants. Her research focuses on heritage languages and Second Language acquisition in migratory contexts. Among her most recent publications are Afro-Hispanic Texts for the ELE Classroom (Journal of African Literature, 2024) and Childhood Heritage Languages: A Tangier Case Study (Languages, 2025).

Carolina Castillo Ferrer, Francisco Ayala Foundation

Ph.D. in Hispanic Philology from the University of Granada. She served as a Spanish language instructor at Scripps College in California (2006–2007) and, from 2007 to 2020, taught Spanish as a Second Language (ESL) and Spanish Literature in international programs for U.S. college students in Spain (IES Abroad Granada). Her academic research focuses on the recovery and study of the literature of the Spanish Republican exile of 1939. She co-edited, as lead editor, the volume Ten Essays on Realidad. Journal of Ideas (University of Granada / Francisco Ayala Foundation, 2013). Since 2020, she has been a researcher and archivist at the Francisco Ayala Foundation.
