Gender Politics

Gender-focused editorial policy of the journal RNLAEL

The Revista Nacional de Lingüística Aplicada a la Enseñanza de Lenguas (National Journal of Linguistics Applied to Language Teaching) (RNLAEL) reaffirms its commitment to gender equality, diversity and inclusion as fundamental principles that should govern all academic and editorial activity. In accordance with international best practices in scientific publishing, RNLAEL adopts this editorial policy with a gender focus, articulated in five strategic axes:

1. Editorial policy and transparency

    • Institutional commitment: RNLAEL declares its commitment to the promotion of gender equality and inclusion as part of its editorial mission.
    • Inclusive language: The use of inclusive and non-sexist language will be promoted in all published texts, as well as in the journal's institutional communication (calls for papers, instructions, communications with authors and reviewers, etc.).

2. Editorial board and peer review

    • Diversity in editorial and evaluation teams: RNLAEL will ensure equal representation of women and men, as well as other gender identities, in its editorial board and among reviewers, promoting a plural and diverse environment.
    • Double-blind review: The use of the double-blind peer review system is guaranteed to minimise possible gender bias or other factors that may compromise the fairness of the evaluation process.

3. Equal access and authorship

    • Fairness in authorship participation: The participation of female researchers is encouraged and their contributions are valued equally. Initiatives will be promoted to make research led by women and diverse teams more visible.
    • Transparency in authorship: Authors will be asked to provide a statement of contributions to ensure a fair and recognised distribution of the work. The journal will promote the use of explicit authorship criteria that avoid the systematic displacement of women to secondary positions.

4. Analysis and monitoring

    • Data collection with a gender perspective: RNLAEL will incorporate voluntary mechanisms to collect information on the gender identity of authors, reviewers and editors, exclusively for statistical purposes and continuous improvement.
    • Monitoring of gender indicators: Periodic reports will be published on editorial participation and performance disaggregated by gender (acceptance rates, review times, distribution of editorial tasks, etc.), in order to identify and correct possible inequalities.

5. Dissemination, training and awareness-raising

    • Promotion of research with a gender perspective: RNLAEL will positively assess works that integrate a gender perspective in their objects of study, methodologies or analyses, and may organise monographic issues or specific calls on these topics.
    • Training of the editorial and evaluation team: Continuing education opportunities for editors and reviewers on issues of gender equity, unconscious bias and good inclusive editorial practices will be promoted.
    •

This policy came into force upon its publication in 2020 and is periodically reviewed by the editorial committee to ensure its relevance and updating. RNLAEL invites its entire community to participate actively in the construction of a more just, inclusive and representative science.
