Abstract

Cognitive processing of language is a branch of psycholinguistics that can potentially help develop foreign language teaching. This paper discusses the potential benefits of cognitive processing research in the teaching of relative clauses to students of Spanish as a Foreign Language. Specifically, animacy and syntactic dependency relations in foreign language teaching and native language teaching would be addressed.

Author Biography

María Guijarro Sanz, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

PhD in applied linguistics, works as an associate professor at the Philology Faculty in Universidad Complutense de Madrid and also at the Centro Complutense para la Enseñanza del Español. She teaches General linguistics and Spanish as a foreign language, respectively. Her research interests focus on cognitive linguistics and digital technology applied to language teaching, cognitive processing of constructions and pragmatics of courtesy in young Spanish native speakers. To develop those interests she collaborates with IMCORDIS and DIGILANG, two research groups that comprise the subjects mentioned above.
