Recognition of new words in L3 by chinese university students of Spanish: the case of English-Spanish cognates

Abstract

This study examines the process of inference of new words in spanish that have cognates in english by chinese university students, whose L1 is Chinese, L2 is English and L3 is Spanish. Our data comes from a think-aloud test conducted through interviews. The results shows that the identification capacity is related to the linguistic distance and the level of the known languages and the vocabulary learning strategies.

Nisi Wei, Renmin University of China

Professor of Spanish at the Spanish Department of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Renmin University in China since 2015. She has a Master's Degree in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language from the Complutense University of Madrid (2012) and received her Ph.D. in Spanish Language and Literature from the Complutense University of Madrid (2015).  Her research focuses on the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language and the acquisition of vocabulary.
