ChatGPT in DELE Preparation Class: A Didactic Proposal and Impressions from Spanish as a Foreign Language Students

Abstract

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years has brought about significant technological advancements in various fields. Recently, the emergence of tools like ChatGPT has revolutionized the paradigm of information access (Kirmani, 2022). This paper presents the advantages and disadvantages of employing ChatGPT in Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE) teaching. Additionally, a series of considerations are listed to ensure optimal results when interacting with this AI (Morales-Chan, 2023). As an illustration of this type of communication, an example of a didactic sequence designed for a DELE B1 preparation class is provided, specifically for the written tasks of this exam (Martínez-Atienza de Dios and Zamorano Aguilar, 2018). Finally, after implementing this didactic model in the classroom, the impressions of the participating students are presented. Their opinions are gathered through two means: an online survey created for this purpose and direct observations by the teacher in the classroom. The results conclude that the informants showed some reluctance to use the chat in the ELE class, despite clear advantages of using it as a learning tool.

Débora López Mata, University of Barcelona

She graduated in Hispanic Philology from the University of Barcelona (2016, UB) and has a special mention in Peruvian Language and Literature from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (2016). After completing her Master's degree in ELE (2019, UB), she began to develop her professional career in South Korea in various institutions such as the Instituto Cervantes, Chonbuk National University and Korea University, where she works as a MAEC-AECID reader. Currently, she is a doctoral student in the field of attitudes and beliefs towards Spanish varieties as part of the PRECAVES XXI research group. She also collaborates in the Unilingua language exchange programme.
