Abstract

The aim of the present study was to design and validate two research tools for assessing the use of reading strategies by Spanish as a second language learners with an immigrant background: the Survey of Reading Strategies of Immigrant Learners (CELAI) and the Elicitation/Introspection Questions (PEI). The strategies considered in both research tools were classified into two categories: (a) prevention strategies and (b) resolution strategies. The pilot study was conducted with a group of adult immigrants whose linguistic profile resembled that of the target group for which CELAI and PEI were designed. The results obtained helped to modify various aspects that turned out to be problematic, so that both tools could be used in future studies for assessing the use of reading strategies by adult immigrants learners of Spanish as a L2.
