Abstract

The aim of the present study is to explore metadiscourse strategies in the genre letter to the editor produced in educational contexts. For this purpose, we collected a sample of one hundred twenty-five letters to the editor (27.969 words) from Greek novice students in L2 Spanish and L1 Spanish speakers. The study adopts an intercultural rhetoric approach in order to study discourse between individuals from different cultures. The classification of the rhetorical features is based on Hyland’s typology (2017), adapted to meet the characteristics of the letter to the editor genre. The results suggest statistical significance in almost all global and per-category comparisons.

Author Biographies

Panagiota Salapata

Graduated in Hispanic Studies from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2010). In 2012 she completed her Master's degree in Linguistics applied to the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language at the Antonio de Nebrija University. In 2017 he obtained her international PhD degree from the same university (outstanding mention). She currently teaches E/LE and alternates her teaching activity with the preparation of the exams for the State Certificate of Spanish language in Greece. She has participated in international conferences and has published articles on rhetoric, intercultural rhetoric, metadiscourse and error analysis.

Angélica Alexopoulou, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

Degree in French Philology, University of Athens; D.E.A. in Linguistics, Sorbonne University Paris IV; PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Athens and the Complutense University of Madrid. Professor of Applied Linguistics for Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at the Department of Language and Hispanic Literature of the University of Athens, her teaching and research work focuses on error analysis, development and evaluation of written skills, pragmatics, text linguistics and interculturality. She has published the books Análisis de errores en la interlengua de aprendientes griegos de español (Madrid: Ediciones del Orto, 2005), Fundamentos de lingüística aplicada a la enseñanza del español como lengua extranjera (Athens: Simmetria, 2017) and has edited the volume Tendencias y líneas de investigación en lingüística aplicada a la enseñanza del español como lengua extranjera (Madrid: Ediciones Clásicas, 2018). He has participated in several international conferences and has published research articles in Spanish and Latin American journals.
