Abstract

This paper characterizes the Spanish writing of conditional sentences in past unreal, temporality and modality in alternations, and metaphors and ambiguous verbal uses. High school students commented on the meaning of representative sentences, they wrote about literary characters if they "had made other decisions", then they had the option to write another version and explained their performances. The study contemplates the linguistic intentionality approach by means of temporal, semantic, morphological, adverbial expressions and verbal phrases in the conjugation of these sentences. The results contrast the identification of meaning in the sentences read and the difficulties in writing them. The writing shows alternation in the apodosis, the subjunctive previous past (antepretérito) in both parts of the conditional, with a meaning of unreality and less possibility, and of greater possibility through the potential previous-postpast (antepospretérito). The results exhibit the predominant confusion with the potential postpast (pospretérito), as well as the modal possibility phrase in unreal past.
